STUDIO MENTOR

LUMP Studio runs a Mentorship Program that provides ceramic artists with studio time in return for performing studio duties. Mentors act as “studio helpers,” carrying out tasks assigned by the studio management team. LUMP hopes mentors gain practical experience about running and managing a pottery studio. This is not a paid position.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Mentors act as “studio helpers” to the studio owner/manager. Tasks include:

  • Perform studio duties as assigned by the studio owner/ manager/assistant, e.g. (un)loading kiln, recycling clay, mixing glazes, organizing and tidying studio, calculating firing costs, opening/closing of the studio, organizing studio events, etc…

  • Perform administrative duties 

  • Enforce the rules and ways of working of the studio

  • Secure the health and safety of everyone in the studio

  • Support in the efficient running of the studio

  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with others

  • Be a welcoming, supportive, and encouraging presence in the studio

  • Provide technical, creative and administrative support when requested 

 

LUMP encourages everyone on its team to remain active in their ceramic practice. Candidates who show a clear plan to do so will be given preference. In addition, preference will also be given to those who currently do not have/cannot afford their own studio space.

EXPERIENCE

1-3 years experience in ceramics. Preference given to those with some experience assisting in the running of a ceramic studio.

WORKING HOURS/LOCATION
  • Mentors are required to work shift(s) totaling about 11 hours per week. (Studio opening hours approximately 11am – 9pm.)

  • They are also required to attend 1 team meeting per month, of about 2 hours. This may fall outside of their shift.

REMUNERATION

Although this is NOT a paid position, mentors will be given studio time (up to 15 hours per week to be used outside of their shift, a personal storage area).

LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT

Standard Mentorship assignments are 12 months, but may be shortened/extended based on the performance and needs of the candidate.
